BALTIMORE, MD - The visiting Dickinson Red Devils took advantage of its opportunities in a 2-1 upset of #8 Johns Hopkins at historic Homewood Field Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays suffered their first loss of the season and are now 11-1-0 overall and 4-1-0 in the conference. The Red Devils improve to 9-1-2 and 2-1-2. For Hopkins, it is the first Centennial loss at Homewood since October 7, 1995 and just the third ever.
The Red Devils got on the board in the 13th minute off a free kick just outside the top left corner of the Blue Jays' box. Paul Coyle struck the ball, a Hopkins defender attempted to clear it and instead sent it past goalie Neil MacLean (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher's School) to make it a 1-0 game. The Blue Jays outshot the Red Devils 7-2 in the first half but could not find the equalizer.
Coming out of the break, Dickinson struck again, in the 49th minute. Thomas Parkinson played a long ball down the left side to Matthew Critchlow who then fired a low shot underneath a diving MacLean. Hopkins finally got on the board in the 58th minute, cutting the deficit to 2-1. From just inside the Dicksinson box, sophomore Max Venker (Oldsmar, FL/Palm Harbor University High) touched the ball back to freshman Scott Bukoski (Sagamore, MA/Bourne). Bukoski stepped up and ripped a hard shot past the outstretched fingers of Red Devils' goalie Rodrigo Barboza.
In the 78th minute, freshman Scott Elliott (Westlake, OH/Saint Edward) forced a turnover in the Devils' zone, dribbled across the top of the box and fired a shot that Barboza just pushed over the cross bar. On the ensuing corner kick, freshman Brian Esoda's (Hamilton, VA/Loudoun Valley) header just hit the left post. Hopkins continued to press but could not find the back of the net again.
The Blue Jays out shot the Red Devils 16-5 on the afternoon and had 12 corners to the Devils seven. MacLean finished with one save in the loss, which ended his shutout streak of 327:29. Barboza posted six saves in the win. With his goal, Bukoski extends his goal scoring streak to five straight and his point streak to 11 straight games. He now has 30 points (13g, 4a) on the season.
Hopkins returns to action on Tuesday, October 9 as Juniata visits Baltimore. The non-conference game is slated to begin at 7 pm.
