BALTIMORE, MD - The #21 Johns Hopkins men's tennis team won its third straight match with a 7-2 victory over Christopher Newport Sunday afternoon. The Blue Jays improve to 3-1 while the Captains, ranked #12 in the region, fall to 5-1.
Hopkins opened the match with wins at second and third doubles, taking an early 2-1 lead. Senior Hillen Smith, Jr. (Baltimore, MD/Boys Latin) and junior Joe Vasoontara (Bangkok, Thailand/Loomis Chaffee), ranked #4 in the region, defeated John Braig and Steve Myers 8-1 at second doubles. At third doubles, freshman David Maldow (Jericho, NY/Jericho Senior) and junior Rafael Roberti (Summit, NJ/Summit) beat David Weiner and Dylan Young 8-6.
In singles action, the Blue Jays won five of six matches to take the match overall. Maldow, ranked #10 in the nation, defeated John Mook, ranked 15th in the Atlantic South, at second singles. Maldow defeated Mook in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. Sophomore Larry Wei (Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) also won in straight sets, beating Braig 6-1, 6-1 at third singles. At fourth, freshman Dan Myers (Chattanooga, TN/Collegiate School) defeated Young 6-4, 6-3. Roberti beat Myers at fifth singles without dropping a game, 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Peter Vale (Haverford, PA/Episcopal Academy) wrapped up the match with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Weiner at sixth. Vasoontara lost in three to Eddie Glidewell, ranked 17th in the region.
Hopkins returns to action on Tuesday, March 20 at Gettysburg. The Centennial Conference match is set for 4:00 pm.
