GETTYSBURG, PA - The #21 Johns Hopkins men's tennis team opened its Centennial Conference slate with a 9-0 win at Gettysburg Tuesday afternoon. It is the fourth straight win for the Blue Jays who improve to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference. Tuesday's match was the first match of the season for the Bullets (0-1, 0-1 CC).
Hopkins opened the match by sweeping the three doubles matches. Senior Matt Naftilan (Nashville, TN/Montgomery Bell Academy) and freshman Peter Vale (Haverford, PA/Episcopal Academy) defeated Derin Wilson and Mike Leary 8-4 at first doubles. Freshman David Maldow (Jericho, NY/Jericho Senior) and junior Rafael Roberti (Summit, NJ/Summit) won at second, beating Thane Schweyer and Dale Beshore 8-4. And at third doubles, freshmen Vincent Shoeck (Hagerstown, MD/North Hagerstown) and Dan Myers (Chattanooga, TN/Collegiate School) beat Matt Salter and Patrick Dempsey 8-3.
In singles play, the Blue Jays completed the match by sweeping all six singles matches. At first singles, Madlow, ranked 13th in the nation and fourth in the region, beat Wilson 6-3, 6-0. Sophomore Larry Wei (Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) then won at second, defeating Leary 6-3, 6-1. At third singles, Myers beat Beshore 6-4, 7-6 (9-7). Roberti defeated Salter 8-4 at fourth. Vale won over Schweyer at fifth singles, 8-3. Sophomore Tripp Weber (Blue Bell, PA/Germantown Academy) then beat Dempsey 8-5 at sixth singles.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, March 24 when #14 Carnegie Mellon visits Baltimore. The match is set to begin at noon.
