BALTIMORE, MD - The #26 Johns Hopkins men's tennis team rebounded from a disappointing loss to Carnegie Mellon Saturday with a 9-0 blanking of McDaniel Wednesday afternoon. The Blue Jays are now 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the Centennial Conference. The Green Terror fall to 0-4 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
Hopkins opened the match by sweeping all three doubles matches to take an early 3-0 lead. Juniors Matt Naftilan (Nashville, TN/Montgomery Bell Academy) and Rafael Roberti (Summit, NJ/Summit) paired for an 8-1 win at first doubles over Brian Kastner and Bill Ross. At second, freshman David Maldow (Jericho, NY/Jericho Senior) and Peter Vale (Haverford, PA/Episcopal Academy) defeated Chris Reed and Mark Winklestein 8-2. Sophomore Tripp Weber (Blue Bell, PA/Germantown Academy) and freshman Vincent Schoeck (Hagerstown, MD/North Hagerstown) paired to beat Corey Graybill and Dan Hovorka 8-4.
In singles play, Naftilan defeated Ross at fourth singles, while losing just one game, 6-0, 6-1. Roberti followed that with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Djerj Matkovic at second singles to seal the win for Hopkins. Weber then won at fifth singles, beating Winklestein while also losing just one game, 6-0, 6-1. Maldow, ranked #13 in the nation, won at first singles. He beat Kastner 6-1, 6-2. Vale then won his fifth match in a row, beating Hovorka 7-6 (6), 6-4 at third singles. Freshman Adam Attas (Demarest, NJ/Academies @ Englewood) beat Reed 6-2, 6-3 at sixth to close out the match.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday with two matches. Hopkins hosts Ferrum in Baltimore at 10:00 am. The Blue Jays then travel to Allentown, PA to take on the Muhlenberg Mules at 3:00 pm.
