ALLENTOWN, PA - The No.21 Johns Hopkins men's tennis team won its second straight match and fourth straight over Muhlenberg Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays defeated the Mules 8-1 to improve to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in the Centennial Conference. The Mules fall to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the conference.
Hopkins swept all three doubles matches to open up a 3-0 lead in the match. Senior Hillen Smith, Jr. (Baltimore, MD/Boys Latin) and junior Joe Vasoontara (Bangkok, Thailand/Loomis Chaffee), ranked No.4 in the region, defeated Robbie Goldwein and Doug Wayne at first doubles. At second, juniors Matt Naftilan (Nashville, TN/Montgomery Bell Academy) and Rafael Roberti (Summit, NJ/Summit) blanked Brian Wernick and Jonathan Farber 8-0. At third freshmen David Maldow (Jericho, NY/Jericho Senior) and Dan Myers (Chattanooga, TN/Collegiate School) won 8-2 over Jesse Kirschenbaum and Mark Apostolos.
In singles action, the Blue Jays won five of six matches to take the win. No.4 Maldow won 6-2, 6-0 over Goldwein at first for his fifth consecutive win. Smith lost at second to Wernick for Muhlenberg's lone point of the match. Vasoontara ended a four-match losing streak with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Kirschenbaum at third. Sophomore Larry Wei (Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) moved to 6-3 on the season, beating Apostolos at fourth. Freshman Vincent Schoeck (Hagerstown, MD/North Hagerstown) remained unbeaten at 2-0 with a straight sets win over Farber at fifth. And at sixth, sophomore Tripp Weber (Blue Bell, PA/Germantown Academy) defeated Jamie Goldman to move to 3-0 overall.
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, April 1 at 10:00 am when Mary Washington visits Baltimore. The Blue Jays and the Eagles met twice in 2006, once during the regular season and once in the NCAA Championships. Mary Washington won both meetings.
