BALTIMORE, MD - The #21 Johns Hopkins men's tennis team #9 Mary Washington ending a three-match losing skid to the Eagles. The Blue Jays won 5-4 for their third straight win and seventh in the last eight matches. The Eagles fall to 11-6 on the season while the Blue Jays are now 7-2.
Mary Washington won two of the three doubles matches to take the early 2-1 lead. At first doubles, No.10 Zach Detwiler and Randy Loden topped No.4 Joe Vasoontara (Bangkok, Thailand/Loomis Chaffee) and Hillen Smith, Jr. (Baltimore, MD/Boys Latin) 8-4. The Eagles also picked up a win at second doubles, when John James and Jon Pollak defeated juniors Matt Naftilan (Nashville, TN/Montgomery Bell Academy) and Rafael Roberti (Summit, NJ/Summit) 8-4. Hopkins won a point at third doubles after freshmen Dan Myers (Chattanooga, TN/Collegiate School) and David Maldow (Jericho, NY/Jericho Senior) won 9-7 over Eddie Carver and Evan Goff.
In singles action, the Blue Jays rallied by winning four of the six matches to win 5-4. No.13 Maldow defeated No.7 James in straight sets at first singles for his sixth straight win. Vasoontara held off Loden 7-6 (4), 7-5 for a win at second. Jason Dunn got a point for the Eagles by beating sophomore Larry Wei (Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) in three at third singles. Myers picked up a win at fourth when he beat Carver in straight sets. Roberti then lost at fifth to Goff in three. Freshman Peter Vale (Haverford, PA/Episcopal Academy) won his sixth straight match by defeating Pollak in two at sixth singles.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, April 4 when Washington College visits Baltimore. The showdown between the two Centennial Conference rivals, both unbeaten, is set for 4:00 pm.
