#13 Hopkins Goes Undefeated in Centennial

CARLISLE, PA - The #13 Johns Hopkins men's tennis team completed an undefeated Centennial Conference season with a 6-3 win over Dickinson Saturday. For the Blue Jays it is their second undefeated conference season in the last three seasons. Hopkins is now 14-2 overall and 8-0 in the conference, while Dickinson falls to 12-6 overall and 5-3 in the conference. The Blue Jays 14 wins are a single-season record.

Hopkins won just one doubles match, as Dickinson took a 2-1 lead heading into singles play. Senior Hillen Smith (Baltimore, MD/Boys Latin) and junior Joe Vasoontara (Bangkok, Thailand/Loomis Chaffee) got the lone doubles point for the Blue Jays at first doubles.

In singles play, the Blue Jays won five of six matches to take the win. Freshman David Maldow (Jericho, NY/Jericho Senior) moved to 16-5 on the season with a straight sets win over Whit McFarlane at first. Vasoontara also won in straight sets, beating Hunter Holbrook at second. Sophomore Larry Wei (Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) won his fifth straight match with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Rich Rosenthal at third.

Freshman Dan Myers prevailed in three sets at fourth singles, beating Pavel Hejsek for his 13th win of the season. Junior Rafael Roberti (Summit, NJ/Summit) won in two at sixth, besting Eric Schroeder for his sixth consecutive win. The Red Devils lone win in singles came at fifth. Trevor Heck defeated freshman Peter Vale (Haverford, PA/Episcopal Academy) in straight sets.

Hopkins will close out the regular season on Sunday, April 22 when The College of New Jersey visits Baltimore. The match is set to begin at 1:00 pm. The Blue Jays will host the 2007 Centennial Conference Championships April 28-29. Matches and times will be announced Monday afternoon.
