SALISBURY, MD - The No.21 Johns Hopkins men's tennis team defeated Salisbury 7-2 on Sunday for its sixth straight win overall and third straight over the Sea Gulls. The Blue Jays improve to 10-2 on the season, while the Gulls fall to 12-5. Hopkins swept all six singles matches to take the win.
Salisbury earned wins at first and second doubles to lead Hopkins 2-1 early. The Blue Jays lone win in doubles came from juniors Rafael Roberti (Summit, NJ/Summit) and Matt Naftilan (Nashville, TN/Montgomery Bell Academy). The pair beat Sean Larson and Rainy 8-2 and improved to 4-1 on the season.
Hopkins took control of the match with wins at all six singles matches. Freshman Peter Vale (Haverford, PA/Episcopal Academy) on his ninth straight match, defeating Jason Williams in straight sets at sixth singles. Roberti also won in straight sets, beating Larson 6-2, 6-2 at fifth. Freshman Dan Myers (Chattanooga, TN/Collegiate School) improved to 11-3 on the season with a 6-2, 6-1 win at fourth over Sasha Felikson.
Sophomore Larry Wei (Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) earned a 6-4, 6-4 win over Evan Thomas at third singles. Junior Joe Vasoontara (Bangkok, Thailand/Loomis Chaffee) then won 6-4, 6-3 over Scott Burtzlaff at second. No.13 David Maldow (Jericho, NY/Jericho Senior) won his 13th match of the season with a three-set win over Brendan Kincaid at first. Maldow is now just one win shy of tying the school single-season record of 14.
Hopkins returns to action on Tuesday, April 10 when Washington College visits Baltimore. The Blue Jays and the Shoremen will square off at 2:00 pm in a battle of Centennial Conference unbeatens.
