BALTIMORE, MD - The #11 Johns Hopkins field hockey team used a three-goal first half to top Dickinson 4-1 Wednesday evening. The Blue Jays, who are off to one of the best starts in program history, move to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the Centennial. The Red Devils drop to 3-6 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
Junior All-American Emily Miller (Garden City, NY/Garden City) got the Blue Jays on the board just 48 seconds in. Sophomore Gabi Henn (Lambertville, NJ/South Hunterdon Regional) sent a long ball in to the middle from the right side. The ball deflected off a Red Devil, Miller collected the loss ball, tucked it between her defender's legs and backhanded the ball into the goal.
Graduate student Leah Dudley (Westborough, MA/Westborough) gave the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead at 15:12. Sophomore Brittany Bland (Littleton, CO/Colorado Academy) passed the ball down to Dudley on the left side and she scored off a hard shot that snuck inside the far post. With time winding down for the half, Bland picked up her second assist of the game to send Hopkins into the locker room with a three-goal lead. Bland took a hard shot from up top and freshman Jennifer Motylinski (Medford, NJ/Medford) deflected it in for her first career goal with 2:08 to play in the half.
Megan Kelly put Dickinson on the board at 58:39 to make it a 3-1 game. Alyssa Sands passed the ball down to Kelly, who beat a Hopkins defender and scored to the left post. The Blue Jays responded less a minute later to push the lead back to three. Sophomore Catie Farrow (Norwalk, CT/Brien McMahon) scored on a rebound off a shot by Miller for her first goal of the season.
Sophomore Sophia Tieu (Cupertino, CA/Cupertino) finished with eight saves in the cage for Hopkins. For the Red Devils, Amanda West made seven saves. Miller now ranks tied for eighth in school history with 64 career points and is tied for sixth with 27 career goals.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, September 29 at Haverford. The Centennial Conference match-up is set for 1:00 pm in Haverford. The Blue Jays lead the all-time series with the Fords, 23-3-1.
