COLLEGEVILLE, PA - The #22 Johns Hopkins men's tennis team won its 15th straight Centennial Conference regular season match with a 9-0 win at Ursinus Saturday. The Blue Jays improve to 6-5 overall and 4-0 in the conference while the Bears drop to 3-9 overall and 0-5 in the conference. In the win, senior Rafael Roberti (Summit, NJ/Summit) won his 44th career singles match, tying the program record.
Hopkins swept through all three doubles matches to take control early. At first, sophomore David Maldow (Jericho, NY/Jericho) and freshman Andrew Wang (Sparta, NJ/Sparta) won 8-0 over Jason Zerbe and Greg Lewis. At second, Roberti and senior Matt Naftilan (Nashville, TN/Montgomery Bell Academy) also won 8-0, beating Joseph Ellwood and Phillip Ricci. Junior Tripp Weber (Blue Bell, PA/Germantown Academy) and sophomore Dan Myers (Chattanooga, TN/Collegiate School (VA)) beat Josh Hollaman and Robert Saunders 8-1 at third.
In singles play, Hopkins won all six matches in straight sets to win the match. Maldow did not drop a set in beating Zerbe at first to improve to 17-2 on the season. He is now just one win shy of tying the single-season program record for wins - a record he set last season with 18 wins. At second, Wang dropped just one game in beating Hollaman to move to 11-6 on the season. Roberti tied the school record for career singles wins without dropping a game at third, beating Lewis. At fourth, Weber won 6-3, 6-1 over Todd Wonderlin for his third straight win. Naftilan won at fifth while losing just one game to Kevin Dean. And at sixth, Myers defeated Ellwood 6-0, 6-3.
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday at #17 Carnegie Mellon. The non-conference match is scheduled to begin at noon. The series between the Blue Jays and the Tartans is tied at 1-1.
