BALTIMORE, MD - Senior Leah Horton (Wayne, PA/Upper Merion) scored just 58 seconds in to overtime on Sunday to lift #10 Johns Hopkins to a 2-1 victory over Washington & Lee. For the Blue Jays it was their fifth straight win as they remain unbeaten on the season at 5-0. The Generals slip to 0-4 as they dropped their third straight overtime contest.
Washington & Lee took the lead early, capitalizing on a penalty corner. Sallie Armstrong took a shot off Emily Mathews corner but it was saved by junior Sophia Tieu (Cupertino, CA/Cupertino). Mathews collected the rebound on the post and banged it home to give the Generals a 1-0 lead.
Hopkins finally answered in at 39:29, also capitalizing on a penalty corner. Horton collected the ball from junior Brittany Bland (Littleton, CO/Colorado Academy) on the corner and shot. Bland then cut in from the end line and deflected the ball off a defender and into the cage, knotting the score at 1-1. The game would stay mostly in the Blue Jays' offensive zone but Caroline Habliston made seven saves in the second half to help keep the Generals in the game.
In the extra period, Hopkins first since a 1-0 win over Washington & Lee on Sept. 23, 2007, the Blue Jays needed just 58 seconds to end the game. Senior Adair Landy (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) passed the ball through the legs of a W&L defender to Horton up high who fired home the game-winner. It is the second fastest overtime goal in Hopkins history.
Tieu finished with five saves in earning her second straight win, while Habliston posted 13 in the loss. With her assist, Horton now has 25 for her career, ranking her second in program history and just five behind career leader Amy Bruschi.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 17 for its first home game of the season. The #2 Salisbury Sea Gulls visit Homewood Field for a 7:00 pm match-up of two top 10 teams.
