BALTIMORE, MD - The 14th-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team scored five second-half goals en route to a 7-0 win over visiting Bryn Mawr Friday afternoon on a chilly Homewood Field. The win improves the Blue Jays record to 11-3 overall and 6-2 in the Centennial Conference. The Owls slip to 0-15 on the season with an 0-9 mark in the conference.
Senior Gabi Henn (Lambertville, NJ/South Hunterdon) scored the game's opening two goals, at 5:58 and 12:10. Her first goal came after some nifty stick work by senior Andrea Vandersall (Hampton, NH/Winnacunnet) through traffic. Henn was wide open on the left post and one-timed Vandersall's pass just inside the post. Junior Jenn Motylinski (Medford Lakes, NJ/Shawnee), about six yards out, slid a pass to Henn, who was once again open on the left post. She redirected Motylinski's pass past the Owls' Elizabeth Toft for her fourth of the season.
Just four minutes into the second half, Hopkins took a 3-0 lead when freshman Meghan Kellett (Audubon, PA/Villa Maria Academy) tipped a shot by junior Hayden Maloney (Norwalk, CT/Brien McMahon). The Blue Jays pushed their lead to four just 2:35 later as freshman Liane Tellier (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) scored her first career goal. Senior Kelly Kimmerling (Blythewood, SC/Pioneer (MI)) scored at 46:12 off a short pass from Kellett.
Kimmerling picked up her second goal of the day with just under six minutes remaining to give Hopkins a 6-0 lead. Off a Hopkins penalty corner, junior Sarah Jacobs (Denver, CO/Kent Denver) fired a hard shot from the top of the arc. Kimmerling redirected the shot inside the far post for her fourth of the season. Sophomore Ali Bahneman (Flanders, NJ/Mendham) scored with 3:19 remaining on a penalty stroke to push Hopkins lead to 7-0.
Senior Sophia Tieu (Cupertino, CA/Cupertino) got the start in goal and played 29:09 and was not forced to make a save. Tieu now ranks second all-time in program history in minutes played and is 358:20 shy of tying Jenny O'Hara's record of 4025:00. Sophomore Kim Stein (New Hyde Park, NY/New Hyde Park Memorial) replaced Tieu and played 25:36 without facing a shot. Freshman Elizabeth Peijnenburg (Leende, The Netherlands/Lorentz Casimir Lyceum) replaced Stein and played the remainder of the game.
Henn's two goals on the day give her 20 for her career, pushing her into a tie for 14th in program history. She also now tied for 20th in JHU history with 45 career points.
For the Owls, Toft made 10 saves, including one on a penalty stroke in the first half. In addition, Anna Dela Cruz had three defensive saves for Bryn Mawr.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, October 24 at Christopher Newport. The non-conference game between the 14th-ranked Blue Jays and 18th-ranked Captains is set to begin at 3:00 pm at Captains Field.
