MIAMI, FL - The 17th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team picked up its first win of the season on Tuesday morning, defeating 30th-ranked Tufts 7-2. Hopkins then squared off top-ranked Division II Barry, falling 7-0. The Blue Jays are now 1-3 on the season.
In the morning match, Hopkins took two of three doubles to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Freshman Jacob Barnaby (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista) and sophomore Casey Blythe (Louisville, KY/St. Xavier) won their ninth match of the day, beating Daniel Landers and Paul Kohnstamm 8-2 at second. Freshman Warren Elgort (New York, NY/Trinity School) and sophomore Ryan Rauck (Columbus, OH/Bexley) won at third, 8-2, over Jon Trutt and Murrie Bossen.
In singles action, Hopkins swept the top four spots and picked up a win at sixth to take the match. Junior David Maldow (Jericho, NY/Jericho) won 6-2, 6-2 over Trutt at first. Sophomore Andrew Wang (Sparta, NJ/Sparta) won at second, beating Jake Fountain 6-2, 6-3. At third, Elgort won his eighth match of the season, beating Andrew Rosen 6-3, 6-4. Blythe won at fourth, beating Tony Carucci in straight sets. And at sixth, Barnaby also won in straight sets.
In the afternoon match, the Buccaneers swept the doubles matches to take an early 3-0 lead. Second doubles was a battle, the closest of the three, with Roman Werschel and Marcello D'Armas squeezing out a 9-8 (7-5) win over Rauck and Elgort.
In singles action, first and sixth singles were not completed. Elgort lost at second to Andrew Sharnov, 6-2, 6-0. At third, Blythe also fell by a 6-2, 6-0 score. Junior Peter Vale (Haverford, PA/Episcopal Academy) lost a 6-4, 6-0 match to Jakub Fejfar. And at fifth, Barnaby dropped a 6-1, 6-4 match to Sergio Velez.
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, March 22 when 13th-ranked Carnegie Mellon visits Baltimore. The match is scheduled to begin at noon.
