PHOENIX, AZ - The No. 14 Johns Hopkins baseball team suffered a disappointing loss to No. 13 Southern Maine, 12-7, before rebounding with a 20-6 rout of Concordia in the RussMatt Invitational. The Blue Jays move to 6-6 on the season after the doubleheader.
Lee Bolyard hit a homerun with two men on in the second inning to take a 3-1 lead over No. 13 Southern Maine. John Swarr and Dan Merzel reached after both being hit by pitches. Ryan Biner doubled to score both of them and finish off a five-run inning.
Southern Maine would plate four in the fourth to tie it at five before making a six-run rally in the sixth to lead 11-5. Southern Maine scored six runs on five hits in the sixth inning.
Hopkins would not score again until the eighth inning. Dave Garber opened the inning with a solo homerun. Jesse Sikorski was hit by a pitch and Bolyard walked to put two on base after the homerun. Swarr singled to right field to score Sikorski.
The Blue Jays weren't able to score in the ninth and surrendered to Southern Maine, 12-7.
Lee Bolyard went 2-for-3 with a homerun against Southern Maine.
The Blue Jays went on to face Concordia (WI) later in the afternoon. Harrison Taylor would earn the win after throwing 5.0 innings and notching five strikeouts.
Hopkins opened the game scoring three runs. Matt Bernardi singled to start the inning and scored on an error after Brian Youchak hit a single to center field. Chris Huisman hit a homer to bring Youchak in to score and take a 3-0 lead for the Blue Jays.
A Zach Small solo homerun began the second inning, stretching the lead over Concordia to 4-0.
Concordia score three runs in the fourth inning after a pair of passed balls.
Hopkins continued the battle in the fourth. Small singled to right center and advanced to second on a passed ball. Sam Eagleson walked and also advanced on a passed ball on the next play. Matt Bernardi hit a single to score Small. Youchak would ground out next, but Eagleson scored as well. Bernardi also came around to score in the inning.
The Blue Jays brought home five runs in the fifth inning to earn a 12-5 lead. Concordia secured two outs on the first two batters before Hopkins began a two-out rally. Huisman singled to score Youchak and Bernardi. With bases loaded, Teta went up to bat and hit a double to center field, to earn three RBI.
The Blue Jays went 1-2-3 on defense in the sixth inning before continuing their outstanding offensive performance. With two on base, Bernardi hit a double to tally a pair of RBI on the play. After Aaron Borenstein walked, Jesse Sikorski homered to left field for three RBI. Huisman followed with a single before Dave Kahn knocked another homerun for JHU. Hopkins led 19-5 after the sixth.
The Blue Jays went on to earn the 20-6 victory over Concordia. Matt Bernardi went 5-for-7 and Chris Huisman went 6-for-6 to lead Hopkins' offensive efforts.
Hopkins will face No. 8 Eastern Connecticut State on Friday in the RussMatt Invitational in Phoenix, AZ.
