#17 Johns Hopkins Upends #13 Carnegie Mellon, 6-3

BALTIMORE, MD - The 17th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team upended 13th-ranked Carnegie Mellon, 6-3, in Baltimore on Sunday afternoon. The Blue Jays win their second straight over the Tartans and improve to 2-3 on the year. The Tartans slip to 11-4 with the loss.

Hopkins took a 2-0 lead in the match with wins at first and second doubles, before Carnegie Mellon won at third to make it a 2-1 match heading into singles play. Junior David Maldow (Jericho, NY/Jericho) and sophomore Andrew Wang (Sparta, NJ/Sparta), ranked second in the Atlantic South, won 8-1 over Jon Spero and Bobby MacTaggart at first. Ninth-ranked freshman Jacob Barnaby (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista) and sophomore Casey Blythe (Louisville, KY/Saint Xavier) then won at second, beating Alex Nemerov and Ravi Raghavan 8-3. James Muliawan and Nikola Ljuboja then picked up a win for the Tartans, beating freshman Warren Elgort (New York, NY/Trinity School) and sophomore Ryan Rauck (Columbus, OH/Bexley) 8-5.

Elgort pushed Hopkins lead to 3-1 in the match with a straight sets win at third singles. He beat MacTaggart 6-2, 6-3 to improve to 9-5 on the year. Wang, ranked sixth in the region, then won at second, beating 13th-ranked Nemerov 6-3, 6-4 for his ninth win of the season. Third-ranked Maldow clinched the match for the Blue Jays with a 7-5, 6-0 win over fifth-ranked Muliawan. Yiran Liu cut the deficit to 5-2 with a 6-1, 6-0 win over junior Peter Vale (Haverford, PA/Episcopal Academy) at fifth. Spero followed that with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Blythe at fourth to make it a 5-3 match. Barnaby wrapped up the win for Hopkins, beating Jeremy King, 6-0, 6-3 at sixth.

Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, March 28 as the Blue Jays travel to Allentown, PA to take on the Muhlenberg Mules in their Centennial Conference opener. The match is scheduled to begin at 3:00 pm.
