BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins baseball team went 1-1 on opening day with Rutgers-Newark on Saturday in Baltimore, MD. The Blue Jays won 12-4 in game one of the doubleheader, but Rutgers-Newark returned a 14-11 victory in game two as both teams move to 1-1 on the season.
Hopkins took a 3-1 lead in the third inning with senior Ryan Biner's 3-run homer. Senior John Swarr, senior Dan Merzel and junior Brian Youchak would score on the play.
The Blue Jays returned in the fourth inning to pound out five runs and take a commanding 8-2 lead. After senior Dave Garber reached on a walk, junior Chris Huisman knocked a home run to make it 5-2.
Back-to-back doubles by junior Brendan Walsh and junior Lee Bolyard would follow before Swarr singled to right center to score Walsh. Merzel would reach on a fielder's choice to score Bolyard. Biner doubled to score Merzel to end the scoring spree.
Rutgers-Newark came back with a pair of runs in the fifth inning. Anthony Yeswita homered with a man on base to make it an 8-4 ballgame.
The Blue Jays weren't done yet, scoring four runs in the sixth to put the Scarlet Raiders away. Senior Todd Emr, Youchak, Biner and Merzel all crossed the plate in the sixth to capture the 12-4 win.
Biner led the Blue Jays, going 3-for-4 with a double and a home run. Senior Dave Fioretti, freshman Ryan Kahn and senior Matt Goldman each logged two innings on the mound for JHU, with Kahn earning the win.
In game two, the Blue Jays were down 6-2 in the bottom of the fourth. JHU would score three runs to bring it to 6-5. Sophomore Jesse Sikorski doubled to left center before Bolyard homered to score two. Junior Dave Kahn would come around to score after a single put him on base.
Rutgers-Newark scored a deadly eight runs in the fifth inning, going up 14-6. The Scarlet Raiders would plate three on a Furnaguera homer and three more followed before a strike out ended the inning.
Hopkins would battle back in the bottom of the seventh after facing a 14-7 deficit. Dave Kahn homered to start the inning and Zach Small followed with a bomb of his own, both coming on the first pitch. Junior James Teta, Biner and Emr would each single before Sikorski doubled deep to right field to send two runners home.
Dave Kahn went 3-for-3 with a home run. Sikorski finished 3-of-4 with a homer and a pair of doubles.
The game was halted at the conclusion of the seventh inning because of the diminishing daylight.
The Blue Jays return to action on Friday, March 13 to face Wheaton in the RussMatt Invitational in Phoenix, AZ. Hopkins will play 12 games on the road over spring break in Arizona.
