LANCASTER, PA - The 13th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team won its eighth straight match and remained unbeaten in the Centennial Conference on Saturday with an 8-1 win at Franklin & Marshall. The Blue Jays improve to 9-3 overall, including a 6-0 record in the Centennial. The Diplomats slip to 4-5 on the season and 1-3 in the conference.
Hopkins opened the match by sweeping all three doubles matches to take an early 3-0 lead. Junior David Maldow (Jericho, NY/Jericho) and sophomore Andrew Wang (Sparta, NJ/Sparta) improved to 11-6 on the season with an 8-3 win at first over Armen Vartan and Paul Salierno. At third, freshman Warren Elgort (New York, NY/Trinity School) and senior Tripp Weber (Blue Bell, PA/Germantown Academy) picked up an 8-3 win over Eric Rouff and Josh Calo. Freshman Jacob Barnaby (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista) and sophomore Jake Schneiders (Englewood, CO/Cherry Creek) then won at second, beating Doug Silverstein and Brad Nelson 9-7.
Maldow won his 55th career match, beating Vartan in straight sets at first. Wang improved to 35-9 in his career and won his 10th straight match with a 6-3, 6-1 win at second over Silverstein. Elgort needed three sets to pick up his 14th win of the season, beating Nelson at third. Nelson won the first set 6-2, but Elgort battled back and won the second 6-3 and the third in a super breaker, 10-7. At fourth, Barnaby moved his win streak to seven straight with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Salierno. Weber remained unbeaten on the season at 10-0 with an 8-6 win at sixth over Calo. The Diplomats picked up their lone point of the match at fifth, as Rouff beat Schneiders 8-6.
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, April 12 as it travels to Maryland's Eastern Shore to take on Salisbury. The Blue Jays' final non-conference match of the season is slated to begin at noon.
