BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins baseball team had plenty of energy left from a week of rainouts to defeat Washington, 12-1 in Baltimore on Thursday. The Blue Jays move to 14-11 (6-4 Centennial) with their 70th all-time win over the Shoremen.
After Dan Merzel walked to lead off in the first, Brian Youchak followed with a home run to right field. Todd Emr came behind him with a single to center field before stealing second base. The Blue Jays lead 2-0 after one.
With one out in the second, designated hitter Chris Huisman knocked a solo shot to right to score a third run for Hopkins. John Swarr got a double with two outs after hitting the left field wall. Swarr would end up stranded on second to end the third.
Washington would score its only run after pitcher Joe Coveney hit a home run to left center in the third.
Jesse Sikorski hit a single in the fifth as Dave Kahn followed with a hit to move Sikorski up. Huisman dropped a hit into center field to score Sikorski and Kahn advanced to third, scoring after a balk on the next play. Lee Bolyard walked, but stole second and Swarr walked as Washington signaled a pitching change with bases loaded and one out. Merzel flied out to give the Shoremen two outs. Brian Youchak took his bases-loaded opportunity, hitting a single to right to score Huisman and Bolyard. Ryan Biner followed suit with a hit to right field to score Swarr. A hustle by Youchak gave Biner another RBI on the play. With Biner on first, Emr smacked a dinger to right center to clear the bases, successfully batting around in the fifth. Hopkins would plate eight in the fifth to take the 11-1 advantage.
Junior Matt Wiegand enetered in relief of starter Chez Angeloni. Angeloni struck out six batters in five innings of work.
Youchak brought the offense back for Hopkins in the sixth with a single to score Dave Garber for the 12th Blue Jay run.
Pete Smith threw the sixth for JHU, striking out one. Paul Martone would enter in the top of the seventh for Hopkins. Martone retired one batter in the seventh.
Brian Youchak went 3-for-4 to lead the Blue Jay offense. Youchak hit his second home run of the season,
Hopkins will wrap up the season-series with Washington on Friday, April 17 at 3:30 p.m. in Chestertown, Md.
