CHESTERTOWN, MD - The Johns Hopkins baseball team swept the season-series with Washington today in Chestertown, 8-2. Junior Marco Simmons had a big day on the mound for the Blue Jays (15-11, 7-4 Centennial), throwing a complete game and striking out 13 batters, the best by a Blue Jay this season.
James Teta hit a double to begin the game for Hopkins and would later score on a wild pitch as the Blue Jays led 1-0 after one.
JHU opened it up in the third to score three runs. Teta would score again in the third after a sacrifice fly by Ryan Biner. Todd Emr came up with a double to center field as Dan Merzel scored. Brian Youchak followed with a hit up the middle to push Emr across the plate for a 4-0 lead.
Washington got its only two runs of the game in the fourth after a double by Matt Boucher and triple by Tony Tozzolo would score Ryan Normoyle and Boucher.
Merzel opened the fifth with an infield hit to reach. He would steal second and third base, coming around to score while Emr grounded out to second. Hopkins ended the fifth with a 5-1 advantage.
The Blue Jays scored their final three runs in the eighth as the Shoremen committed three errors in the inning. Emr and Biner started out with singles to put two men on before Lee Bolyard singled and advanced to second on an error, scoring Biner. Emr reached the plate after the error. The Shoremen made a pitching change and Bolyard stole third to put him in scoring position to bring up Dave Kahn. Kahn reached on a fielder's choice and Bolyard scored on a throwing error by the shortstop. Kahn stole second before John Swarr reached on catcher's interference and Teta walked. The Blue Jays would leave three on base in the eighth but their three runs would hand them the 8-2 victory.
Teta, Merzel, Emr and Bolyard each went 2-for-4 for Hopkins.
Simmons' complete game was the first of his career and his 13 strikeouts are the most by a Blue Jay this season. The contest marks the third complete game by a Hopkins' pitcher this season.
The Blue Jays host Muhlenberg on Saturday, April 18 for a doubleheader at Homewood. First pitch is slated for 12:30 p.m.
