CHESTERTOWN, MD - The 12th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team continued its unbeaten run in the Centennial Conference, winning its 27th straight conference match Saturday afternoon. Hopkins shut out host Washington College, 9-0, for its 10th straight win on the season. The Blue Jays improve to 11-3 overall and 7-0 in the Centennial, while the Shoremen fall to 9-7 overall and 4-3 in the conference.
Hopkins took control early, sweeping all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead. Freshman Jacob Barnaby (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista) and junior Peter Vale (Haverford, PA/Episcopal Academy), playing together for the first time this season, beat Brian Cedrowski and Aaron Ellison 8-1 at third. Junior David Maldow (Jericho, NY/Jericho) and sophomore Andrew Wang (Sparta, NJ/Sparta) followed with an 8-2 win at first over Adam Cranford and Brian Danver. Freshman Warren Elgort (New York, NY/Trinity School) and sophomore Ryan Rauck (Columbus, OH/Bexley) closed out doubles with an 8-2 win at second over Todd Green and Michal Switala.
In singles action, Wang won his match at second as Ellison retired due to injury. Wang had won the first set 6-3 and was up 1-0 in the second when Ellison retired. Elgort then clinched the match for the Blue Jays with a 6-3, 6-1 win at third over Cedrowski. Barnaby then won his ninth straight match with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Green at fourth. Freshman Orlando Ferrer (Naples, FL/Bradenton Preparatory Academy) pushed Hopkins lead to 7-0 with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Switala at fifth. It was his 10th straight win as he improved to 1 4-2 on the season. Maldow rallied for a three-set win at first for his 10th straight win. Cranford won the first set 6-3, before Maldow won 12 of the final 15 games to take the match. Vale closed out the match, also winning in three sets, at sixth. He won the first set 6-1 over Danver, before dropping the second 6-3. Vale came back to win the third set 6-1 for his fourth straight win.
Hopkins returns to action on Tuesday, April 21 at Gettysburg. The Centennial Conference match is slated to start at 4:00 pm. Hopkins will then close out the regular season on Saturday, April 25 against Haverford at home.
