YORK, PA - York jumped ahead in the first and never let off the gas, leading 10-3 after four innings to hand the Johns Hopkins baseball team a non-conference defeat, 11-6. The Blue Jays (18-13) scored three runs in the first inning on one error before the Spartans (26-9) gained control for the remainder of the game.
Ryan Biner doubled to right center to bring home James Teta and Dave Kahn to score the first pair of runs for Hopkins in the first. Brian Youchak singled to advance Biner and Biner would come around to score on a fielding error. The Spartans responded with four runs to take the one-run lead after the first inning. The Blue Jays walked three in the first inning and allowed two hits.
In the second inning, York came out strong again, scoring three runs on three hits and two Blue Jay errors. The Spartans led 10-3 after plating another three runs in the fourth inning after four hits.
With two outs in the sixth, Zach Small smacked a home run over the center field wall to score the fourth run for the Blue Jays.
In the top of the ninth, Matthew Bernardi reached on a fielder's choice to give Todd Emr a base runner. Emr hit a double to right field as Bernardi came across the plate for Hopkins. Emr would score on Sam Wernick hit with two outs. Wernick's single to left field marks his first career hit. Hopkins' two runs in the ninth were not enough to eclipse a seven-run deficit as the Blue Jays bowed to York, 11-6.
Zach Small and Brian Youchak led the Blue Jays, both with 2-for-3 outings. Small's home run was the fourth of his career.
The Blue Jays host McDaniel on Friday, April 24 for a crucial Centennial Conference match up. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
