Dickinson Slips Past Hopkins, 5-4

April 8, 2009

Box Score

CARLISLE, PA - A clutch run in the ninth with two outs lifted Dickinson over the Johns Hopkins baseball team in Wednesday in Carlisle. The Red Devils scored four runs in the fifth inning to take a 4-0 lead. The Blue Jays (12-10, 5-3 Centennial) were not about to come up with a hit after tying the score at four heading into the final inning.

Junior Andrew Pevsner fanned a pair of batters in the first frame and three in the second to get the Blue Jays started.

John Swarr singled to right field and stole second after two groundouts opened the second. Merzel grounded out to put Hopkins back on defense.

Dickinson's Jordan Kaufman singled to reach, but was caught stealing by Swarr in the third inning. A pop-up to third would end the inning.

The Blue Jays got back-to-back hits from Jesse Sikorski and Lee Bolyard in the fifth with two outs. Bolyard singled up the left field line before Swarr singled up the middle to load the bases. Dan Merzel hit a line-drive to left to drive in Sikorski and Bolyard for a pair of RBI. Brian Youchak flied out to right field to end the fifth.

Dickinson would plate three runs on just one out after a triple from Evan Hennessey. Greg Harbeck entered in relief of Pevsner and stuck out the first batter he faced before picking off Evan Farha to end the inning with a 4-2 deficit. Dave Kahn doubled to left with two outs in the sixth and a passed ball moved him to third with Chris Huisman in the box for Hopkins. Huisman grounded out to end the sixth for JHU.

Youchak had a sacrifice fly to bring in Bolyard to score before Ryan Biner hit a single to left to score Swarr and tie the game at four in the seventh inning.

The Blue Jays went three up, three down in the bottom of the seventh before Harbeck struck out three Red Devils in the eighth to bring up the final frame, still tied at 4-4.

Three fly-outs to the outfield for Hopkins brought up the final Dickinson at-bats. The Red Devils had runners on first and second as Mike Schuster bunted but a quick play by Todd Emr got the lead runner at third to make the first out. Kaufman flied out to center field for the second out. Tyler Rosa dropped one in the shallow outfield to score Mike Shimkin, a pinch runner for Matt Tuneski. The run gave Dickinson the 5-4 win over the Blue Jays.

The Blue Jays travel to Messiah on Thursday to make up a contest originally scheduled for March 5. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
