GRANTHAM, PA - The Johns Hopkins baseball team rebounded on Thursday with a 10-4 win over the Messiah Falcons on the road. The Blue Jays (13-10, 5-3 Centennial) scored eight in the sixth inning to take the lead over the Falcons, securing the win.
Senior Dave Garber led off with a solo homer in the fifth before Todd Emr repeated the scene in the sixth to tie the game at three apiece. Dave Kahn reached on an error and stole second before Borenstein and James Teta each walked to load the bases. Garber pulled off a three-RBI double to give the Blue Jays a 6-3 lead. Gabrer and Youchak earned the double-steal and Youchak was hit by a pitch to put him on base. Mike Aspegren, Lee Bolyard and Emr each singled to reach, all earning RBI's. Emr's hit completed the cycle for the Blue Jays before Kahn had the final hit of the inning. Kahn stole second base before a strikeout at the plate ended the rally. Hopkins scored eight runs on six hits in the sixth. Kahn had back-to-back stolen bases in his two at-bats. The Blue Jays led 10-3 after six.
Hopkins scored one in the first inning as Todd Emr singled to send Matt Bernardi across the plate after he led off with a single.
A sacrifice fly from Sam Tajiri to right field in the second put the falcons on the board as Ben Kirk scored. Senior Dan Sciffner fanned a pair of batters to end the inning.
Kirk walked to lead off in the fourth and Jordan Zimmerman took care of the rest, sending a home run over the center field wall as the Falcons took the 3-1 lead.
With two outs in the fifth inning, freshman Aaron Borenstein lost track of a wild pitch, but returned to the plate with a bare hand-dive to get the runner out at the plate to end the inning, leading the way to an eight-run rally.
Messiah scored its final run of the game in the bottom of the ninth to bring the score to 10-4.
Harrison Taylor was credited with the win to move to 1-0 on the season. Senior Henry Striegl and freshman Blake Platt each recorded their first innings-pitched of the season.
Garber finished 3-for-4 with a homerun, two doubles and a stolen base. Garber tallied four RBI.
Hopkins returns home on Friday, April 10 to host Dickinson. The game is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start.
