BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team defeated #17 Muhlenberg, 73-66, for the first time in 11 meetings between the two conference foes, dating back to the 2005-06 season. Ten different Blue Jays put points on the board to increase the winning streak to four games. The Blue Jays improve to 11-7 overall and 9-5 in the Centennial Conference. The Mules fall to 14-3 overall and 11-2 in the conference.
Muhlenberg struck first and obtained an 18-10 lead at 12:02 after a layup by sophomore Alexandra Chili. Chili went 3-for-3 from 3-point range during the first eight minutes of the game.
The Blue Jays went a 19-2 over the next seven minutes of play to take a 29-20 lead with 5:11 remaining in the half. Junior Lyndsay Burton (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) capped the run by hitting two free-throws.
Muhlenberg would cut the lead to four with three minutes remaining the first half, but Hopkins would pull ahead by 10 points on a 3-pointer by senior Britni Lonesome (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic) with 1:14 left in the half. The Blue Jays took a 37-27 lead into the locker room at half time.
Chili and junior Kelly McKeon combined for all 27 of Muhlenberg points in the first half. Chili netted 16 points and McKeon added 11.
The second half did not start the way the Blue Jays would have liked. Muhlenberg eliminated the 10-point in just over three minutes to tie the game at 41 apiece with 16:52 showing on the game clock.
The Mules continued their hot play, taking a seven-point lead with 11:32 to play after a layup by Chili. Muhlenberg had a 22-5 run to open the half.
The Blue Jays answered right back by scoring the next nine points, taking a 53-49 lead with 8:39 on the clock. Senior Katie Biggart (Darien, CT/Darien) capped the run by hitting a jumper.
Hopkins turned these nine points into 22-5 run which started at 11:32 and ended at 4:39 after a layup by sophomore Chantel Mattiola (Trappe, PA/Perkiomen Valley) to give the Blue Jays a 63-54 lead.
The Blue Jays did not let their lead fall to less than five points for the remainder of game and took the 73-66 victory.
McKeon led all scorers in the game with 32 points for Muhlenberg. Chili added 24 points for the Mules.
Three different Blue Jays scored in the double digits. Burton led the team with 13 points while seniors Monica Mitchell (Reynoldsburg, OH/Reynoldsburg) and Leslie Markun (Mill Valley, CA/The Branson School) added 10 points each. Senior Siobhan Callanan (Barrington, IL/Barrington) grabbed 13 caroms in the win.
The Blue Jays were 26-of-56 (.464) from the floor and 4-of-13 (.308) from beyond the 3-point arc. The Mules shot 23-66 (.348) from the floor and were 7-for-30 (.233) from three-point range. The Blue Jays outrebounded the Mules 49 to 32.
The Blue Jays return to action on February 3 when Gettysburg comes to town. Game time is set for 6:00 pm.
