LA VERNE, CA - The fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins water polo team got a pair of fourth-quarter goals to edge third-ranked Whittier, 7-5, on Friday night in the Claremont Convergence. The Blue Jays win their second straight to improve to 9-7 overall, while the Poets slip to 6-9.
Hopkins led 3-1 after the first quarter and 4-3 at the half. But Whittier came back in the third to tie the match at 5-5 heading into the final stanza. The Blue Jays held the Poets scoreless in the final quarter, while getting goals from sophomores Eli Levitt (Miami, FL/Ransom Everglades) and Kielan Crow (Portola Valley, CA/Lick-Wilmerding) to take the 7-5 win. Levitt scored the go-ahead goal with just under four minutes to play, while Crow added an insurance goal about a minute later.
Sophomore Ross Schofield (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) led the Blue Jays with two goals and an assist. While senior Michael de Lyon (Newbury Park, CA/Newbury Park) and freshman Stephen Kingery (Moraga, CA/Campolindo) each had a pair of assists. Crow finished with a goal and an assist, while also grabbing four steals.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, October 9 against second-ranked Redlands at 1:00 pm PST and top-ranked Pomona-Pitzer at 6:20 pm.
