BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins men's tennis team opened its dual meet slate with a tough task, facing last year's NCAA Runner-up, Amherst, on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays put up a tough fight, but fell 7-2 to the Lord Jeffs.

In doubles competition, Amherst took a 2-1 lead with wins at first and second, while Hopkins won at three. The Blue Jays two losses came by a total of just four points. At first, recently crowned USTA/ITA New England Doubles Champions, Moritz Koenig and Wes Waterman edged seniors Casey Blythe and Andrew Wang, 8-6. Sophomores Andy Hersh and Jeffrey Kamei lost a tough 8-6 match to Mark Kahan and Luis Rattenhuber, who lost in the USTA/ITA New England Doubles title match to their teammates. The Blue Jays picked up their first point of the match when junior Warren Elgort and senior Ryan Rauck beat Joey Fritz and Justin Reindel, 8-5.

Though the Blue Jays lost five of six singles matches, four of those were decided in three sets. Elgort followed up his doubles win with a 6-4, 7-6 (4) win at third over Fritz. Justin Reindel won the only other match decided in straight sets, with a 7-6, 6-2 win over freshman German Gonzalez at sixth. At first, Kahan beat Wang, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 while Rattenhuber won at second over Hersh, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. At fourth, Koenig won over Blythe, 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 and at fifth, Waterman beat freshman Jeremy Schwartz 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.

Today's match wraps up the fall portion of Hopkins schedule. The Blue Jays will return to action in the spring.
