LANCASTER, PA - The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team defeated Franklin & Marshall, 60-50, in Lancaster. Freshman Alex Vassila (Potomac, MD/Winston Churchill) led the Blue Jays with her first-career double-double and a career-high five blocks. With the win, Hopkins improves to 14-9 overall and 12-7 in the Centennial. The Diplomats fall to 10-14 overall and 6-13 in the conference.
Vassila recorded the double-double with 11 points and game-high 14 rebounds. Senior Anastasia Wynn (Reisterstown, MD/McDonogh) scored a team-high 14 points. Senior Britni Lonesome (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic) and junior Lyndsay Burton (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Cental) each scored 10 points for Hopkins.
Franklin & Marshall freshman Alexa Barbush lead all scorers in the game with 18 points.
Hopkins jumped out to 21-9 lead at 9:57 after a Vassila layup. Sophomore Megan Pauley scored Franklin & Marshall's first field goal at 15:22.
The Blue Jays were then held scoreless until 4:31 when sophomre Kat Fox (Oceanport, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) broke the draught with a layup. The Diplomats took the lead with nine seconds left in the first half on a jumper by Pauley.
The Diplomats took a 28-27 lead into halftime by outscoring the Blue Jays 19-6 in the last 10 minutes of the first half.
The first six minutes of the second half saw four ties and three lead changes. Senior Steph Kielb (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) drained a 3-pointer at 13:16 to give the Blue Jays a 43-39 lead.
Kielb's bucket started a 17-1 run for Hopkins. The run was capped by a 3-pointer by Wynn. This put the Blue Jays ahead, 57-40, with 7:30 showing on the clock. The Blue Jays never looked back and held at least a nine-point lead for the remainder of the game.
Vassila recorded four of her five blocks in the final seven minutes of the game.
The Blue Jays return to action on Saturday, February 20 when they host Washington in the last home game of the regular season. Game time is 1:00 pm.
