Western New England Tops Hopkins, 9-6

Chandler, AZ - Western New England hands the Johns Hopkins baseball team its second straight loss in Arizona by a score of 9-6. The Golden Bears held a 7-3 lead after five and a half innings and the Blue Jays cut the lead to 7-6 after seven. Sophomore Mike Lawlor shut the door on Hopkins to earn the win for Western New England, who improves to 6-1 on the season. Hopkins falls to 7-3.

Hopkins took a 2-1 lead after the first inning when senior Chris Huisman (Davidsonville, MD/Archbishop Spalding) hit a two-run home run to right field. Senior Dave Kahn (New Hyde Park/Herricks) scored on the play after reaching on a double over the left fielders head.

In the third, Huisman doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Jesse Sikorski (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers Academy).

The Golden Bears exploded for five runs in the top of the fourth. Junior Tony Trubia led off the inning with a solo home run to left center. Junior Jason Leclerc singled and freshman Mike Rubino doubled with one out. Leclerc and Rubino scored on a two-RBI single up the middle by sophomore Tom Bouvier. Bouvier and junior Dudzinski would later score on a Blue Jay error.

Senior Steve Kearney scored Bouvier on an RBI groundout to give Western New England a 7-3 lead in the top of sixth. Hopkins scored a run in the bottom of the inning when sophomore Sam Wernick (Dallas, TX/Dallas Jesuit College Prep), who reached on a base hit, scored on a Golden Bear error.

The Blue Jays scored two more runs in the sixth to make the score 7-6 in favor of the Golden Bears. Sikorski singled in Huisman and Youchak scored on an RBI single by sophomore Aaron Borentstein (Scottsdale, AZ/Saguaro).

Western New England plated two runs in the top of the ninth. Senior Joe Griglun led off the inning with a single through the left side. Griglun later scored on a single by junior Andrew Fatse. Fatse would score later in the inning.

Hopkins was held scoreless in the final two innings by Lawlor. Lawlor came in with no outs in the seventh to stem the Hopkins rally. Lawlor earned the win pitching three innings, allowing only one hit, zero runs, and striking out five Blue Jays.

Junior Evan Michaud was the starting pitcher for Western New England. Michaud allowed three runs on five hits and could not earn the win because he only pitched four innings.

Senior Marco Simmons (Baltimore, MD/Gilman) took the loss for Hopkins by allowing six runs, three earned, in five innings. Simmons stuck out four and allowed six hits. Senior Andrew Pevsner (Calabasas, CA/Agoura) pitched three innings in relief. Pevsner had two strikeouts and allowed only one run.

Trubia went 4-for-5 for the Golden Bears with a home run. LeClerc had two hits and Bouvier had two hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored.

Brian Youchak (Pittsburgh, PA/Vincentian Academy) had three hits for the Blue Jays. Huisman hit a home run and a double to total two RBIs and three runs scored. Senior Dave Kahn (New Hyde Park/Herricks) also had two hits for Hopkins.

Both teams had 11 hits and made four errors in the game, but Hopkins allowed four unearned runs while Western New England allowed only one unearned run. This proved to be the difference in the game.

The Blue Jays return to action tomorrow when they play a doubleheader against Keene State. Game one is scheduled to start at 10:00 am MT.
