Eagleson, Hopkins Shut Down Southern Maine

Chandler, AZ - The #30 Johns Hopkins baseball team defeated #12 Southern Maine, 9-1, on the strength of sophomore Sam Eagleson's (Reading, PA/Governor Mifflin) eight innings of one-run pitching. The Blue Jays had three long balls in the game as well. With the win, Hopkins improves to 10-3 while Southern Maine falls to 5-1.

Blue Jay starter Eagleson went eight innings and allowed only one run in his third win of the season. Eagleson scattered nine hits and had six strikeouts and only one walk.

Hopkins struck first in the top of the third pushing five runs across the plate. Dave Kahn (New Hyde Park/Herricks) hit an RBI double down the left field line to score Lee Bolyard (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock). After Brian Youchak (Pittsburgh, PA/Vincentian Academy) was intentionally walked with two outs Jesse Sikorski (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) scored Kahn with a single to left. Senior John Swarr (Radnor, PA/Conestoga) then launched a three run home run to give Hopkins five runs in the inning.

Southern Maine scored one run in the bottom of the third on an RBI double by Mike Eaton down the right field line to score Anthony Pisani, who also reached on a double.

Bolyard blasted a home run to left in the fourth and Youchak scored on a throwing error after stealing third in the fifth to put the Blue Jays ahead, 7-1, after five complete innings.

Sikorski hit a towering home run to right in the seventh to put another run on the board for Hopkins.

Bolyard led off the eighth with a triple to right center and later scored on a rope single up the middle by Kahn. This would be the final run of the game as Hopkins won, 9-1.

Kahn had three hits, a double, a triple and two RBIs for the Blue Jays. Youchak went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Sikorski had two hits, a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. Swarr also had two hits with a home run and three RBIs. Boylard had a home run and a triple while scoring three runs.

For Southern Maine, Eaton went 3-for-3 while John Carey and Pisani each had two hits.

Collin Henry took the loss for the Huskies allowing eight runs, three earned, in seven innings pitched. Henry allowed 10 hits and struck out six Blue Jay batters.

Hopkins had 13 hits and two errors while Southern Maine had nine hits and three errors.

The Blue Jays return to action tomorrow against Eastern Connecticut to conclude their spring trip to Arizona. Game time is 8:30 am MT.
