Eighth-Ranked Johns Hopkins Blanks Dickinson, 9-0

March 31, 2010

Box Score

BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins men's tennis team rolled to its 31st consecutive Centennial Conference win on Wednesday with a 9-0 shutout of visiting Dickinson. The Blue Jays win their sixth straight match to improve to 8-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference. The Red Devils slip to 6-5 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

Hopkins opened the match with a sweep of the doubles to take an early 3-0 lead. Senior David Maldow (Jericho, NY/Jericho) and junior Andrew Wang (Sparta, NJ/Sparta) dropped just one game in an 8-1 win at first over Ross Anstaett and Hunter Holbrook. For Maldow, it was his 58th career doubles win, leaving him one shy of tying Joe Vasoontara '08 for first in program history. Sophomore Jacob Barnaby (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista) and junior Casey Blythe (Louisville, KY/St. Xavier) won 8-2 at second over Will Golinkin and Pavel Hejsek. At third, freshman Andy Hersh (Valrico, FL/Newsome) and junior Ryan Rauck (Columbus, OH/Bexley) won by an identical score over Matt Wood and Chris Mueller-Wolf.

In singles action, Hopkins took second through sixth in straight sets en route to the win. At second, sophomore Warren Elgort (New York, NY/Trinity School) lost just three total games in a 6-2, 6-1 win over Holbrook. At third, Hersh beat Golinkin, 6-1, 6-3 for his 12th win of the season. Freshman Morgan Dauer (Lloyd Harbor, NY/Cold Spring Harbor) followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win at fourth over Hejsek. At fifth, senior Peter Vale (Haverford, PA/Episcopal Academy) needed just 13 total games to defeat Wood, 6-0, 6-1. Blythe won at sixth, beating Mueller-Wolf, 6-3, 6-2. The toughest match of the afternoon proved to be at first singles, which needed a super-tiebreaker to decide the winner. Maldow beat Anstaett 6-4 in the first set, but Anstaett battled back to win the second 7-5. Maldow then won 11-9 in the super-tiebreaker to complete the sweep of the Red Devils and win his team-best 13th match of the season. In addition, it was Maldow's 73rd career singles win, making him the winningest singles player, male or female, in Johns Hopkins history.

Hopkins returns to action with a pair of matches on Saturday, April 3. Hopkins will face both Ursinus and seventh-ranked Kenyon on Saturday. The Blue Jays and the Bears will square off in Centennial Conference action in Baltimore at 1:00 pm. While Hopkins and Kenyon will meet at 2:00 pm in Gambier, OH.
