BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins baseball team swept a double-header from visiting Rutgers-Newark at the Blue Jay Baseball Diamond by scores of 13-4 and 15-0. Four different pitchers combined to pitch the first Blue Jay no-hitter since 2003 in the second game of the double-header. The Blue Jays open their season with a 2-0 record while the Scarlet Raiders fall to 1-2.
The no-hitter came just one day shy of the seven-year anniversary of the last Blue Jay no-hitter. Jeremy Brown ('03) pitched a no-hitter against Lakeland on March 8, 2003.
In game one, the Blue Jays took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first on a blast to right field by grad student Brian Youchak (Pittsburgh, PA/Vincentian Academy). The Scarlet Raiders would score three in the top of the second on RBI singles from Michael Cassese, Patrick Reitemeyer, and Anthony Yeswita. The 4-2 lead for Rutgers-Newark would not last long, however.
The flood gates opened for Hopkins in the second as the Blue Jays plated nine runs, seven of which came with two outs. Senior Brendan Walsh (La Jolla/The Bishop's School) highlighted the inning with a two-RBI single.
The Blue Jays added single runs in the third and the sixth while the Scarlet Raiders added a solo run in the sixth.
Sophomore Sam Eagleson (Reading, PA/Governor Mifflin) recorded the win in his collegiate pitching debut. Eagleson pitched three shutout innings, allowed only one hit, and struck out five. Sophomores Garrett Gomez (Carlsbad, CA/Santa Fe Christian) and Aaron Schwartz (Cypress, CA/Fairmont Prep) each recorded two strikeouts in one inning of relief ball.
The bottom of the first was the same as in game one, as Youchak hit his second two-run home run of the day to put the Blue Jays on top, 2-0. Senior Dave Kahn (New Hyde Park, NY/Herricks) launched a solo home run in the second to add to the lead.
The Blue Jays would then add three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. Kahn ripped a 3 RBI-double down the left field line in the sixth.
Hopkins added four run in the seventh and two in the eighth on six Rutgers-Newark errors in the two innings.
The Blue Jay pitching staff had a spectacular game as the four pitchers combined to allow no runs, no hits, 11 strikeouts and only four walks. Senior Greg Harbeck (Glen Ridge, NJ/Montclair Kimberley) recorded the win by pitching six innings and recording six strikeouts.
Sophomore Alex Eliopoulos (Arlington, VA/The Heights School) entered the game next and pitched one inning. Sophomore Lucas Henneman (Atlanta, GA/Chamblee) and senior Andrew Pevsner (Calabasas, CA/Agoura) each struck out two batters in their respective innings of work.
Not to be overshadowed by the pitchers, multiple hitters had great first days at the plate. Youchak led the way with four hits, two home runs, five RBIs, and five runs scored. Seniors James Teta (Centereach, NY/Sachem) and Kahn recorded four hits each. Senior Stephen Bejsiuk (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) went 3-for-3 on the day with two runs scored.
The Blue Jays return to action on March 12 in Arizona when they play Monmouth (IL). Gametime is set for 1:00 pm MT. Hopkins will then take on Concordia (IL) at 4:00 pm MT.
