BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins baseball team scored runs in each of the first five innings to defeat the visiting Green Terror of McDaniel, 7-3. Senior Marco Simmons (Baltimore, MD/Gilman) allowed only one earned run in seven innings pitched to earn the win. With the win, the Blue Jays improve to 15-3 overall and 4-0 in the Centennial Conference while the Green Terror fall to 5-8 overall and 1-4 in the conference.
McDaniel drew first blood in the top of the first when lead-off batter Brandon Kline hit a two-strike pitch over the left field wall.
Hopkins answered in the bottom of the first when Jesse Sikorski (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Matthew Bernardi (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest), who reached on a single right field. Hopkins then scored two in the second on a solo home run from Brendan Walsh (La Jolla, CA/The Bishop's School) and an RBI single by Chris Huisman (Davidsonville, MD/Archbishop Spalding) to score James Teta (Centereach, NY/Sachem). The Blue Jays would not look back for the rest of the game.
Hopkins would add a run in the third after Lee Bolyard (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock) walked, stole second, and scored on a RBI single up the middle by Walsh.
Dave Kahn (New Hyde Park/Herricks) is a two-run home run over the left field foul poll in the fourth and Teta hit an RBI single in fifth to put the Blue Jays ahead, 7-1.
The Green Terror scored solo runs in the seventh and ninth to make the final score 7-3 in favor of the Blue Jays.
Simmons earned the win for Hopkins to improve to 2-1 on the season. Simmons pitched seven innings and allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits and four strikeouts.
Mike Freeman took the loss for the Green Terror after allowing seven runs, six earned, in five innings of work. Freeman allowed nine hits and had four strikeouts.
Walsh led the Blue Jays with three hits, including a solo home run, and two RBIs. Teta had two hits with an RBI and a run scored while Chris Huisman (Davidsonville, MD/Archbishop Spalding) had two singles with an RBI.
Kline had two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored for McDaniel while Patrick Christopher added two hits as well.
Hopkins had 11 hits and two errors in the game while McDaniel totaled eight hits with one error.
The Blue Jays and Green Terror return to action tomorrow at McDaniel to close out the season series.
