BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins baseball team hit four home runs in a 17-9 marathon game against Catholic that was called after seven innings due to darkness. The Blue Jays pounded out 15 hits and four home runs in the game. With the win, Hopkins improves to 27-3 while Catholic falls to 16-7.
Brian Youchak (Pittsburgh, PA/Vincentian Academy) put the Blue Jays on the board in the first inning with a three-run home run to right field.
Catholic scored in the top of the second when LJ Travaglia scored on a wild pitch.
Dave Kahn (New Hyde Park/Herricks) launched a grand slam home run in the second to put the Blue Jays ahead, 7-1, after two innings.
The Cardinals plated three runs in the third to cut their deficit in half. Eamonn Burke and and Dave Grear each had RBI doubles and Kory Smigocki hit an RBI single, all with two outs.
Catholic then scored five runs in the fourth inning. Dimitri Deoudes hit an RBI single, followed by a two-RBI double by Burke. Smigocki had an RBI groundout and Grear had an RBI double.
Hopkins scored three runs in the home half of the fourth on three consecutive RBI singles by Youchak, Kahn, and Jesse Sikorski (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers Academy). The Blue Jays held a 10-9 lead after four innings.
Hopkins added four more runs in the sixth on a solo home run by Matthew Bernardi (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) and a three run home run by Sikorski. Hopkins added two more in the sixth and one in the seventh inning to take a 17-9 lead.
The game was called in the eighth inning so all the statistics from the eighth are not official.
AJ Hellow earned the win for the Blue Jays pitching 0.2 innings in relief. Billy Robbett took the loss for Catholic allowing five runs on six hits in two innings of work.
Andrew Pevsner (Calabasas, CA/Agoura) struck out four Cardinals in two innings of relief ball.
Sikorski had three hits, including a home run, and four RBIs for the Blue Jays. Bernardi had three hits, a home run and four runs scored. Kahn had two hits and five RBIs, four of which came with one swing of the bat. Youchak had two hits, a home run and four RBIs. Huisman had two hits and crossed the plate four times.
Grear had four hits, three doubles and two RBIs for the Cardinals. Burke had two hits and three RBIs while Deoudes had two hits as well.
Hopkins had 15 hits and no errors in the game while Catholic pounded out 11 hits and committed three errors.
The Blue Jays return to action tomorrow when the host Washington in Centennial Conference action. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
