Johns Hopkins Splits with Haverford, Delaware

BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins men's tennis team wrapped up the regular season on Saturday with a win at Haverford and a loss at Division I Delaware. Hopkins defeated Haverford, 8-1, to complete its fourth straight undefeated Centennial Conference slate. Hopkins then traveled to Newark, DE and dropped a 6-1 decision to Delaware. The Blue Jays are now 18-5 overall and 9-0 in the Centennial Conference.

Against the Fords, the Blue Jays opened the match by sweeping all three doubles matches. At first, senior David Maldow (Jericho, NY/Jericho) and junior Andrew Wang (Sparta, NJ/Sparta) picked up an 8-3 win at first over Kevin Caulfield and Danny Himelstein. Sophomore Jacob Barnaby (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista) and junior Casey Blythe (Louisville, KY/St. Xavier) won 8-2 at second over Will Garrett and Hailiu Yang. And at third, sophomore Warren Elgort (New York, NY/Trinity School) and junior Ryan Rauck (Columbus, OH/Bexley) beat Matthew Cebul and Natty Sergay, 8-6.

In singles action, Hopkins swept five of the six matches over Haverford to take the win. At first, Wang beat Caulfield 6-3, 6-2. Elgort won at second, beating Yang, 6-3, 6-1. At third, Barnaby did lose a game in a 6-0, 6-0 win over Garrett. The Fords picked up their lone point of the match at fourth. Sergay won in three over senior Peter Vale (Haverford, PA/Episcopal), 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 1-0. Freshman Morgan Dauer (Lloyd Harbor, NY/Cold Spring Harbor) remained unbeaten on the year with a 6-1, 6-1 win at fifth over Michael Gelberg. Sophomore Michael Chang (Winston Salem, NC/Forsyth Country Day School) won at sixth, beating Jacob Weisenthal, 6-2, 6-1.

In the afternoon, Hopkins won two matches, one each in singles and doubles, against Delaware in the 6-1 loss. In doubles, the Blue Hens won two of three matches to take a 1-0 lead in the match. In Division I, doubles count as just one team point. Austin Longacre and Andre Vorobyov defeated Maldow and Wang, 8-0, at first. Chris Hincker and Courtney Scott won at second over Barnaby and Blythe, 8-5. And at third, Hopkins picked up its first win as Elgort and Rauck beat Sam Barrer and Camilo Perez, 8-3.

In singles, Wang earned the Blue Jays' second win and first point of the match with a win at second. He beat Scott, 7-6 (7-4), 0-6, 1-0 (11-9) for his ninth straight win. Maldow lost in three at first, falling 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 to Longacre. At third, Hincker beat Elgort 7-5, 6-1, and Vorobyov won at fourth, beating Barnaby 6-0, 6-1. Barrer defeated Vale at fifth, 6-3, 7-5, and Nick Piacente won at sixth over Dauer, 8-2, handing him his first loss of the season.

Hopkins has the week off to prepare for the Centennial Conference Tournament as the Blue Jays look to win their fourth straight and fifth overall title. As the top seed in the tournament, Hopkins will host its semifinal match on Saturday and the championship match on Sunday.
