Hopkins Keeps Washington at Bay

BALTIMORE, MD - The #2 Johns Hopkins Baseball team opened the Centennial Conference tournament with an 8-2 win over visiting Washington. After a scoreless first four innings, the Blue Jays scored three runs in the fifth inning and never looked back. Hopkins extended its winning-streak to 28 games and improves to 35-3 on the season while the Shoremen fall to 17-14 on the season.

Grad student Brian Youchak (Pittsburgh, PA/Vincentian Academy) became the all-time career hits leader in Hopkins history on his third single of the game. Youchak passed Johns Hopkins Hall of Famer John Christ, who had 232 career hits. Youchak now has 233 hits in his career.

The Blue Jays got on the board in the fifth inning as Chris Huisman (Davidsonville, MD/Archbishop Spalding) hit an RBI single to left to score Lee Bolyard (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock). Huisman and James Teta (Centereach, NY/Sachem) then scored on Youchak's rope single to right.

Hopkins added one run in the sixth when Stephen Bejsiuk (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) singled home Jesse Sikorski (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers Academy).

The Shoremen scored two runs in the top of the seventh to cut their deficit in half. Matt Boucher hit a sacrifice fly to score Sean Connole and Ryan Normoyle hit a double off the left field fence to score John Rolewicz.

The Blue Jays made the score 8-4 after their half of the seventh. Youchak and Sikorski had RBI singles and John Swarr (Radnor, PA/Conestoga) had a two-RBI single.

Alex Eliopoulos (Arlington, VA/The Heights School) earned the win for Hopkins to improve to 7-0 on the season. Eliopoulos allowed two runs on four hits in 6.1 innings pitched. He had eight strikeouts and no walks.

Shane Mattingly took the loss for Washington to fall to 5-2 on the season. Mattingly allowed seven runs on 12 hits in 6.1 innings pitched.

Hopkins had 14 hits while Washington totaled six hits. Neither team committed any errors.

Washington will face Swarthmore in an elimination contest at 9:00 am at the Blue Jay Baseball Diamond. Swarthmore will be the home team.

The Blue Jays will play Haverford at 12:00 pm or 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game. Haverford will be the home team.
