WESTMINSTER, MD = The Johns Hopkins men's tennis team won 88 of 99 possible games en route to a 9-0 win over host McDaniel Wednesday afternoon. The win improves the Blue Jays to 4-0 in the Centennial Conference and 10-5 overall, while the Green Terror fall to 3-6 and 0-4.
Freshmen Jeffrey Kamei (Downey, CA/Troy) and Morgan Dauer (Lloyd Harbor, NY/Cold Spring Harbor) won eight straight games to defeat Aaron Waltemeyer and Luke Schmidt at third doubles. Freshman Andy Hersh (Valrico, FL/Newsome) and junior Casey Blythe (Louisville, KY/St. Xavier) then won 8-2 at first over Ben Faber and Dan Hovorka. Freshman Adam Mernit (Bayside, NY/Walt Whitman) and sophomore Michael Chang (Winston Salem, NY/Forsyth Country Day School) wrapped up doubles play with an 8-5 win over Steve French and Justin Ward.
In singles play, Hopkins won in straight sets at first, second, third and sixth singles before fourth and fifth were decided in pro sets. Chang and Kamei each swept their opponents in straight sets without dropping a game, 6-0, 6-0 at second and sixth, respectively. Chang won at third, beating French, while Kamei beat Schmidt at sixth.Hersh lost just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 win at first over Faber. Hersh's win was his team-leading 14th of the season. Blythe also lost just two games in a 6-0, 6-2 win at second over Hovorka. Dauer and Mernit each won 8-0 in a pro set at fourth and fifth, respectively. Dauer's win was over Ward, while Mernit beat Waltermeyer.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, April 10 with a pair of matches at home. At 10:00 am, Hopkins will face Franklin & Marshall in a Centennial Conference match. Hopkins will then face Salisbury at 3:00 pm.
