LYNCHBURG, VA - The Johns Hopkins volleyball team swept Johnson & Wales and Randolph on Saturday to conclude the Lynchburg Tournament. Hopkins posted a tournament record of 2-2 and evens its overall record to 4-4 on the year.
In the first match of the day against Johnson & Wales, Hopkins rolled to victory in straight sets with scores of 25-13, 25-6 and 25-16. The loss drops the Wildcats to 2-6.
Junior Melissa Cole was named to the all-tournament team and led Hopkins with 12 kills, two blocks and an impressive .632 hitting percentage. Sophomore Carolyn Mickelson added seven kills and six aces, while senior KC Stingl chipped in with 7 kills of her own. Freshman Katia Charov led the Blue Jays in assists with 16.
In its final match of the tournament, Hopkins again won in straight sets against Randolph 25-17, 25-18 and 25-13. Randolph falls to 3-5 on the season.
Cole posted 12 kills, 9 digs and three aces to pace the Blue Jays. Junior Sarah Feicht tallied 10 kills and senior Brittany Zimmer notched 9 kills. Sophomore Becky Paynter led JHU in assists with 39, while Mickelson had another strong serving performance with 4 service aces.
Hopkins returns to action on Friday, September 17 as it travels to Pittsburgh, Pa. for the Carnegie Mellon Crossover Tournament. The Blue Jays will open the tournament against Muskingum at 2 pm, before facing Case at 4 pm.
