BALTIMORE, MD - Junior forward Carly Bianco (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) scored a pair of goals to lead 15th-ranked Johns Hopkins to a 5-0 win over visiting Virginia Wesleyan Monday afternoon at Homewood Field. The Blue Jays pick up their first win of the season and improve to 1-1, while the Marlins slip to 0-3 on the season.
Senior Jennifer Motylinski (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) got the Blue Jays on the board just 10:28 into the contest when she collected a rebound off a Bianco shot and buried it for her first of the season. Less than three minutes later, sophomore Liane Tellier (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) one-timed a cross-cage pass from junior Annie Shepard (Grosse Pointe Park, MI/Grosse Point South) to push Hopkins' lead to two.
Bianco then found the cage for back-to-back goals in a five-minute span late in the first half. Off a penalty corner, Bianco struck the ball to senior Hayden Maloney (Norwalk, CT/Brien McMahon), who dumped it right back down to Bianco on the left post. She collected the pass and fired a hard shot to the opposite corner. Her second came just five minutes later when she lifted the ball off her own rebound over the head of Marlins' goalie Chelsea Baker.
Hopkins would strike once more, with 10:43 to play in the second half. Junior Emily Ortega (Camp Hill, PA/Camp Hill/Delaware) corralled a loose ball and lifted it over the goalie from about 15 yards out, Shepard then tipped it on the right post to give Hopkins a 5-0 lead.
Junior Kim Stein (New Hyde Park, NY/New Hyde Park Memorial) made two saves in earning her second career shutout. Baker made 26 saves in the loss for the Marlins. Hopkins held a 49-5 advantage in shots and a 14-4 advantage in corners.
Hopkins returns to action on Thursday, September 9 as the Blue Jays travel to Annville, PA to take on sixth-ranked Lebanon Valley. Game time is slated for 4:00 pm.
