Defending Champion Amherst Downs Johns Hopkins, 6-3

BALTIMORE, MD - Johns Hopkins hosted Amherst on Saturday afternoon and dropped a tough 6-3 match to the defending NCAA Champion. The Blue Jays are now 0-1 on the season while the Lord Jeffs are now 1-0.

Amherst took two of three doubles points to take the early lead in the match. Joey Fritz and Wes Waterman won 8-5 over senior Warren Elgort and freshman Erik Lim at first. While Jon Cypers and Andrew Jung won by an identical score at three beating freshmen Tanner Brown and Ben Hwang. Hopkins picked up its first point of the match with a hard-fought win at second. Senior Jacob Barnaby and freshman Noah Joachim beat Chris Dale and Mark Kahan, 9-8 (2). The win for Barnaby was his 75th career doubles win and moving him into second in school history.

First singles featured a battle of reigning ITA regional champions in Fritz and junior Andy Hersh. Fritz, winner of the ITA New England regional, came from behind to beat Hersh, the ITA Atlantic South champion, 2-6, 6-1, 6-0. Kahan also won a three-setter, beating Brown 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 at second. Amherst picked up another point at third as Jung beat Elgort, 6-3, 6-3. Fourth singles featured another three-set match with Hwang beating Waterman 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (3). Dale beat Lim at fifth, 6-3, 6-2. And at sixth, freshman Jensen Reiter, won 6-4, 6-2 over Cypers.

Hopkins is now idle until February when it kicks off the spring season with a dual match versus Washington & Lee at the Green Spring Racket Club. Hersh's fall season will continue next week at the 2011 ITA National Small College Championship in Mobile, AL scheduled for October 13-16.
