BALTIMORE, MD - The 13th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team picked up a pair of shutouts on Saturday to improve to 3-1 on the season. The Blue Jays opened their Centennial Conference title defense with a 9-0 win over the Dickinson Red Devils before beating the University of Dubuque Spartans, 9-0.
The Blue Jays opened the day with a sweep of the doubles against the Fords. Junior Jacob Barnaby and senior Casey Blythe beat Ross Anstaett and Will Golinkin, 8-2, at first. Junior Warren Elgort and senior Andrew Wang won at second, beating Kurt Mendleson and David London, 8-1. While at third, sophomores Andy Hersh and Jeff Kamei also won by an 8-1 score, beating Dixon Blue and Dan Dewing-Hommes.
In singles play, Hopkins completed the sweep by winning all six singles matches in straight sets and dropping a total of just 10 games. Wang won at first, beating Anstaett 6-0, 6-3. While Elgort won 6-2, 6-2 over Golinkin at second. Hersh then blanked Mendelson at third, 6-0, 6-0. Blythe turned the same trick at fourth, shutting out Blue, 6-0, 6-0. At fifth, sophomore Morgan Dauer lost just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win over Ari Blask. And at sixth, freshman Jeremy Schwartz beat London, 6-0, 6-2.
Hopkins then took on the University of Dubuque in the first ever meeting between the two. Hopkins took all three doubles matches while losing just three games. Barnaby and Blythe blanked Nick Garcia and Shawn Iben at first, while Hersh and Kamei did the same at second over Dishon Deering and Chris Matteson. And at third, senior Ryan Rauck and Schwartz won 8-3 over Demetrius Johnson and Claudio Giraldi.
The Blue Jays then swept all six singles matches in straight sets. Hersh picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win over Garcia, ranked sixth in the nation after the fall season, at first. Barnaby, playing at second, beat Johnson, 6-1, 6-1. While Rauck did not drop a game in a 6-0, 6-0 win over Michael Braden at third. Kamei won 6-1, 6-1 at fourth over Iben and junior Ron Friedman won 6-2, 6-1 at fifth over Deering. At sixth, freshman Joonas Karjalainen beat Giraldi, 6-4, 6-3.
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, March 20 against visiting Bates at 11:00 am at the JHU Tennis Courts.
