BALTIMORE, MD - The 13th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team defeated visiting 23rd-ranked Bates College, 8-1, on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action in Baltimore. The Blue Jays improve to 4-1 on the season, while the Bobcats slip to 4-4.
Hopkins took a 2-1 lead after doubles with wins at first and second. Junior Jacob Barnaby and senior Casey Blythe won 8-5 over Matt Bettles and Rob Crampton at first. While junior Warren Elgort and senior Andrew Wang picked up an 8-4 win at second over Tim Berg and Sam Woods. The Bobcats won their lone point at third as Jeff Beaton and Ben Bogard won a tight 9-7 match over sophomores Andy Hersh and Jeff Kamei.
The Blue Jays then swept all six matches, taking second through five in straight sets. The toughest match came at first where Wang rebounded to win in a third-set tiebreaker. Bettles won the first set, 6-2, but Wang won a close 7-5 decision in the second before going on to win 10-8 in the third set tiebreaker. Elgort beat Crampton at second, winning 6-4, 6-3. At third, Hersh lost just three games in a 6-1, 6-2 win over Berg. While at fourth and fifth, Blythe and Barnaby lost just two games in 6-2, 6-0 wins. And at sixth, freshman Jeremy Schwartz won 6-1, 6-2 over Bogard.
Hopkins returns to action on Monday, March 21 as the Blue Jays travel to Rocky Mount, NC to take on 12th-ranked NC Wesleyan in a rematch of last year's NCAA Sweet 16 match. The match is set to begin at noon.
