ATLANTA, GA - The third-ranked Emory men's tennis team won five of six singles matches to beat visiting Johns Hopkins, 6-3, on Wednesday afternoon. The Blue Jays drop their second straight to fall to 4-3 on the season, while the Eagles improve to 15-2 with their seventh straight win.
Hopkins took a 2-1 lead after doubles play after wins at first and third. Junior Jacob Barnaby and senior Casey Blythe won easily at first, beating Chris Goodwin and Will Humphreys, 8-2, the second-ranked doubles pair in the nation. It was the 75th career win for Blythe, Hopkins all-time career doubles wins leader. Junior Warren Elgort and senior Andrew Wang won a tight 9-7 decision at second over Eric Rothschild and Ayush Bajoria. The Eagles picked up their lone doubles point at third as Dillon Pottish and Colin Egan earned an 8-3 win over sophomore Jeff Kamei and senior Ryan Rauck.
In singles, Emory rallied to win five of six matches to earn the win. Pottish, the top-ranked singles player in the nation, needed three sets to win at first. Wang won the first set, 6-4, but Pottish rebounded to win 6-2 in the second and 7-5 in the third. Ninth-ranked Chris Goodwin won at second, beating Elgort 7-6, 6-3, while Egan won 6-3, 7-6 at third over sophomore Andy Hersh. At fourth Nick Szczurek earned a hard-fought three-set win over Blythe. Szczurek won the first set 6-3, but Blythe took the second 7-6 to force a third and deciding set, which Szczurek won 7-6. Simon Laperusse won at fifth, beating freshman Jeremy Schwartz, 6-4, 6-2. At sixth, sophomore Morgan Dauer came back to win a three-set decision over Humphreys. Dauer lost the first set 6-4, but rallied to win the second 6-2 and third 6-1.
Hopkins returns home to face Kalamazoo on Friday, March 25 at 11:00 am.
