CARLISLE, PA - Graduate student Matt Wiegand pitched six shutout innings to lead the 16th-ranked Johns Hopkins baseball team to a 10-1 victory over Dickinson on Tuesday afternoon in Carlisle, PA. The Blue Jays extend their conference regular season winning streak to 27 games and improve to 10-6 (3-0 CC) on the year, while the Red Devils have now lost four straight and fall to 13-7 (0-3 CC).
Wiegand and the Blue Jay pitching staff surrendered just four hits on the day, walked two and allowed only three batters to come to the plate in five of the nine innings of play. Wiegand pitched six shutout innings with four strikeouts and one walk to move to 2-0.
A trio of juniors closed out the win for JHU as Mike Berliner, Lucas Henneman and Blake Platt each pitched an inning of relief for the Blue Jays.
JHU notched runs in seven of the nine innings, including seven in the first four frames as the Blue Jays jumped out to an early lead and were never truly threatened on their way to the win.
Sophomore Kyle Neverman came through with a two-out single to left field in the top of the first that knocked in junior Aaron Borenstein to give JHU an early 1-0 advantage.
In the second the Blue Jays loaded the bases with nobody out, but came away with only one run as Dickinson freshman pitcher Ryan Kramer avoided a potentially disastrous inning for the Red Devils. With the bases loaded and the top of the Hopkins batting order due to the plate, Kramer allowed just a sacrifice fly to deep center field by freshman Mike Denlinger that brought in sophomore Chris Wilhelm, before escaping the inning without any further damage.
Hopkins once again filled the base paths with no outs in the third and this time produced a much different result. Senior Jesse Sikorski, Neverman and graduate student Joe Borrelli each received free passes to load the bases, before Wilhelm delivered a two-RBI single to right center.
Sophomore Zach Small followed Wilhelm's big hit with a sacrifice fly to left field to give Hopkins a five-run lead. Wilhelm then made it 6-0 after Dickinson junior first baseman Tyler Rosa made a throwing error to third base in an attempt to throw out Wilhelm, allowing the sophomore first baseman to cross the plate.
The Blue Jays added on one run in the fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings to provide the final count of 10-1. Wilhelm led the way for JHU with a 2-for-3 performance with two RBIs, while Small also tallied two RBIs. Neverman (2-for-3) notched two hits, scored twice and added one RBI, while Borenstein also crossed the plate two times.
Rosa went 2-for-4 with one run scored to lead Dickinson, while junior Matt Tuneski tallied the team's lone RBI with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning.
Hopkins returns home for the first time in 24 days on Friday, April 1 as the Blue Jays host Dickinson in Centennial Conference action. Game time is set for 3:30 pm at the Blue Jay Baseball Diamond.
