BALTIMORE, MD - The 13th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team won a pair of matches on Saturday with wins over Muhlenberg and 23rd-ranked Mary Washington. The Blue Jays have now won nine straight as they improve to 13-3 overall and 7-0 in the Centennial Conference.
Hopkins opened the day with a 9-0 win over conference foe Muhlenberg. The Blue Jays dominated in the doubles play, dropping just two games en route to an early 3-0 lead in the match. Junior Warren Elgort and senior Andrew Wang rolled to an 8-0 win at first doubles over Robbie Goldwein and Jason Teitelbaum. At second, senior Jacob Barnaby and sophomore Jeff Kamei turned the same trick with an 8-0 win over Ben Berkowitz and Jordan Rutt. Sophomores Andy Hersh and Morgan Dauer wrapped up doubles as they beat Andrew Brod and Ari Nutovits, 8-2, at third.
In singles play, Hopkins swept all six matches in straight sets to complete the shutout. Hersh dropped just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 win at first over Rutt. It was more of the same at second for Dauer as he beat Goldwein by an identical score. Freshman Jeremy Schwartz also lost just one game, but it came in the second set as he beat Wayne Mitchel, 6-0, 6-1 at third. Freshman German Gonzalez earned a 6-0, 6-3 win over Nutovits at fifth and Kamei was a 6-1, 6-4 winner at sixth over Berkowitz.
Hopkins then jumped out of conference play to take on Mary Washington and came away with a 7-2 win. Hopkins again swept all 3-0 doubles en route to an early 3-0 lead. Barnaby and senior Casey Blythe earned an 8-6 win at first over Riley Baver and Kaz Murata in a match-up of two of the top doubles pairs in the region. Barnaby and Blythe are the top-ranked pair, while Baver and Murata are ranked fourth. Elgort and Wang won 8-2 at second, beating Will Apperson and Andrew Frisk. And at third, Kamei and senior Ryan Rauck won a close 8-6 decision over Kevin Aquino and Alex Blakhin.
The Blue Jays won four of the six singles matches to earn their third straight win over the Eagles. Murata picked up a point for Mary Washington with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Wang at first. Elgort was a 6-3, 6-1 winner at second over Blakhin. At third, Hersh lost just two games as he beat Apperson, 6-1, 6-1. Blythe won at fourth with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Baver. Aquino snagged a second point for the Eagles with a tough 7-5, 7-6 (5) win over Dauer at fifth. And at sixth, Schwartz was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Eric Coltabiano.
Hopkins returns to action with a pair of split squad matches on Wednesday, April 20 versus McDaniel and at Salisbury. Both matches are scheduled to start at 4:00 pm.
