Johns Hopkins Defeats McDaniel and Salisbury

BALTIMORE, MD - The 13th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team earned a pair of wins over McDaniel and Salisbury Wednesday afternoon. The Blue Jays improve to 15-3 overall and clinch the top seed in next weekend's Centennial Conference Tournament with their win over the Green Terror.

Hopkins hosted McDaniel in conference action and came away with a 9-0 win. The Blue Jays and Green Terror opened the match with singles play due to weather concerns and JHU swept all six matches in straight sets. Sophomore Andy Hersh won at first, 6-1, 6-2 over Justin Ward. At second, freshman Jeremy Schwartz won by an identical score over Ben Faber. Freshman German Gonzalez dropped just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win over Steve French at third. Junior Ron Friedman was a 6-0, 6-3 winner at fourth as he beat Brian Kron. Junior Michael Chang won 6-1, 6-1 at fifth over Chad Palman and freshman Joonas Karjalainen lost just one game en route to a 6-0, 6-1 win at sixth over Matthew Langsdale.

In doubles play, the Blue Jays won all three matches, while dropping a total of just four games, to complete the sweep. At first, Gonzalez and Schwartz won 8-1 over Faber and Palman. Chang and Friendman won by the same score over Ward and French at second. And at third, freshman Joey Frank and Karjalainen beat Kron and Langsdale, 8-2.

Meanwhile, in Salisbury, MD the Blue Jays and the Sea Gulls were squaring off in non-conference action. Hopkins beat Salisbury, 6-3, to win its seventh straight over the SU. At first doubles, senior Casey Blythe and junior Jacob Barnaby were 8-4 winners over Andrew Nottage and Daniel Barnas. David Lupinetti and Henry Stuhler then beat senior Andrew Wang and junior Warren Elgort, 8-6, at second to even the match at 1-1. Senior Ryan Rauck and sophomore Jeff Kamei pushed the Blue Jays back on top with an 8-4 win at third over Giorgio Athans and Curtis Quandt.

Wang gave Hopkins a 3-1 lead with a 6-3, 6-1 win at first singles over Nottage. Blythe was then a 6-1, 6-2 winner at third over Barnas. Barnaby clinched the match for the Blue Jays as he beat Stuhler, 6-2, 6-1 at fourth. Athans picked up a second point for the Sea Gulls with a three-set win over Rauck at fifth, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (8). Kamei pushed the Blue Jays lead to four at 6-2 with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Justin Smith at sixth. Lupinetti wrapped up the match as he won 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (8) at second over Elgort.

Hopkins wraps up the regular season on Saturday, April 23 as the Blue Jays travel to Chestertown, MD to take on Washington College. The Blue Jays are looking to complete their fifth consecutive undefeated conference season.
