April 3, 2011

Box Score

BALTIMORE, MD - The 12th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team won its fifth straight, and third by shutout, Sunday with a 9-0 w in over 17th-ranked Carnegie Mellon. The Blue Jays improve to 9-3 on the season, while the Tartans fall to 11-7.

Hopkins opened the match by sweeping all three doubles matches to take control early. Junior Jacob Barnaby and senior Casey Blythe won 8-3 at first, beating Bobby MacTaggart and Alex Nemerov. The win was Barnaby's 99th career win (singles and doubles), leaving him just one win shy of becoming the sixth player in school history to reach 100 total wins. At second, junior Warren Elgort and senior Andrew Wang won 8-4 over Duke Miller and Jeremy King. Sophomore Jeff Kamei and senior Ryan Rauck beat Harsha Rao and Jooho Yu, 8-2, at third.

In singles play, Hopkins took three of the six matches in straight sets. Wang pulled out a three-set win in a tightly contested match over Nemerov at first. Wang took the first set, 7-6 (7-1), but Nemerov rebounded to win the second, 7-5, and force a third set. The match would be decided in a super tiebreaker, with Wang winning 11-9 to take the match. Elgort also needed three sets, but won 7-5, 1-6, 6-0, at second over Miller. Hersh needed just two sets, winning 7-5, 6-0, at third over MacTaggart. Blythe and sophomore Morgan Dauer also needed just two sets each to pick up a pair of wins. Blythe won 6-4, 6-1 at fourth over Rao, while Dauer won 6-1, 6-2 at fifth over King. Freshman Jeremy Schwartz closed out the match with a three-set come-from-behind win over Yu. After dropping the first set, 6-1, Schwartz won the second 6-4 before taking the third, 10-4, in a super tiebreaker.

Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, April 6 as the Blue Jays travel to Lancaster, PA to take on Franklin & Marshall. The Centennial Conference match is slated to begin at 4:00 pm.
