LANCASTER, PA - The 12th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team defeated host Franklin & Marshall, 8-1, on Wednesday afternoon to win its sixth straight. The Blue Jays win their 10th match of the season to improve to 10-3 overall and 5-0 in the Centennial Conference, while the Diplomats fall to 6-4 and 2-1 in the conference. In the match, junior Jacob Barnaby won his 100th career match, becoming the fastest player in program history to do so.
At first doubles, Barnaby and senior Casey Blythe lost just two games en route to an 8-2 win over Ross Silverberg and William MacArthur. The win was Barnaby's 100th career win (singles and doubles), as he needed just 125 matches to reach the milestone. He broke Blythe's record of 135 matches to reach 100 career wins. At third doubles, freshmen Jeremy Schwartz and German Gonzalez won 8-3 over Paul Salierno and Samuel Stone. Senior Ryan Rauck and sophomore Morgan Dauer then won 8-6 over Tommy Weibye and Doug Silverstin at second.
In singles play, Hopkins took five of the six matches to complete the win. Blythe won a three-set match at first, beating Silverberg, 6-7 (4), 6-1, 7-6 (4). At second, Dauer beat MacArthur in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (5). While at third, Schwartz lost just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 win over Silverstein. F&M picked up its lone point of the match at fourth, as Weibye beat Barnaby 7-6 (4), 6-4. Rauck won in three sets at fifth, beating Eric Rouff 6-2, 1-6, 1-0 (6). And Gonzalez won at sixth, beating James Tunner 6-1, 7-5.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, April 9 at Haverford. The Centennial Conference match is slated for a noon start.
