Blue Jays Foil Fords with 7-2 Win

HAVERFORD, PA - The 12th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team rebounded from an early 2-1 deficit to sweep all six singles and defeat host Haverford 7-2 on Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action. The Blue Jays win their seventh straight match to improve to 11-3 overall and 6-0 in the conference. The Fords meanwhile, have their six-match win streak snapped and fall to 7-6 overall and 5-1 in the conference. Hopkins sits atop the Centennial Conference standings as the only unbeaten team.

Haverford pushed out to a 2-1 lead after doubles with wins at second and third. Junior Jacob Barnaby and senior Casey Blythe took the lone doubles point for the Blue Jays as they beat Kevin Caulfield and Danny Himelstein, 8-4, at first. Matthew Cebul and Matt Romei then beat junior Warren Elgort and senior Andrew Wang, 8-6, at second. And at third, Hailiu Yang and Will Garrett edged out sophomore Jeff Kamei and senior Ryan Rauck by an identical 8-6 score.

The Blue Jays rebounded by sweeping all six singles matches in straight sets to take the win 7-2. Sophomore Andy Hersh and Blythe won at second and third, respectively, without dropping a game. At fourth, sophomore Morgan Dauer dropped just three games en route to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Romei. Freshman Jeremy Schwartz turned the same trick at fifth, beating Jacob Weisenthal, 6-1, 6-2. At first, Elgort beat Caulfield, 6-3, 6-4 and Barnaby beat Garrett, 7-6 (5), 6-4 at sixth.

Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, April 16 against Muhlenberg. The Centennial Conference match is slated to start at 10:00 am in Baltimore. The Blue Jays will then face non-conference foe Mary Washington at 2:00 pm.
