WILLIAMSTOWN, MA - Host and eighth-ranked Williams College beat 13th-ranked Johns Hopkins, 5-0, in the NCAA Regional Championship Sunday afternoon to advance to the Claremont, CA and the NCAA Quarterfinals. The Blue Jays see their season end at 19-3, while the Ephs improve to 16-7 and will face third-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the next round.
Trey Meyer and Felix Sun put Williams on top early with an 8-2 win at second doubles over junior Warren Elgort and senior Andrew Wang. Will Petrie and Kevin Shallcross pushed the Ephs lead to two as they beat sophomore Jeff Kamei and senior Ryan Rauck at third. Bryan Chow and Matt Micheli completed the host's sweep of the doubles matches with an 8-4 win over junior Jacob Barnaby and senior Casey Blythe.
Micheli moved Williams closer to the quarterfinals with his win at second singles. He beat Elgort, 6-2, 6-2 to put Williams on top 4-0. Meyer then clinched the match for Williams as he beat sophomore Andy Hersh, 6-1, 6-4 at third singles. With the match decided, the remaining four singles matches were halted.
Hopkins ends its season with atleast 15 wins for the fifth straight season and the 19 wins this season for the Blue Jays are tied for second most in program history.
