ST. MARY'S CITY, MD - Visiting Johns Hopkins got a goal in each half to knock off previously unbeaten St. Mary's, 2-1, in non-conference soccer action Wednesday. The Blue Jays snap a two-game skid and improve to 2-2-1, while the Seahawks, who had given up just two goals in their first four games, slip to 4-1-0. It is the third straight meeting between the Blue Jays and the Seahawks that was decided by one goal.
Freshman Matt Carey put the Blue Jays on the board in the 43rd minute with his first career goal and ended a scoreless streak that had reached over 180 minutes for JHU. Carey took a diagonal pass from classmate Kotaro Mitsuhashi and fired a shot into the middle of the Seahawks' goal to make it 1-0.
Senior Sean Coleman added what seemed to be an insurance goal in the 57th minute to give Hopkins a two-goal lead. As it turned out the Blue Jays would need it as the Seahawks pulled within one in the 69th minute when Stephen Hauschild scored off a feed from Chris Quamina. Just two minutes later, Hopkins nearly retook its two-goal lead on a shot from Mitsuhashi, which eluded SMC goalie Austin Brown but rang off the post. The Blue Jays continued to press, getting off six more shots in the final 20 minutes, three of which were saved by Brown, but would settle for the 2-1 win.
Freshman Nick Cerrone made his first career start in goal for the Blue Jays and made six saves, including four in the first half. Brown finished with eight saves for the Seahawks, with six of those coming in the second half, and got a defensive save from one of his teammates. Hopkins had the advantage in shots (25-15) and corners (5-4). It was a physical contest that saw 13 total fouls and six yellow cards.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, September 17 as the Blue Jays open Centennial Conference play at Haverford. Game time is set for 1:00 pm.
